Democrats choose not to filibuster

[On the filibuster, bipartisanship and third party involvement.]

(02-02-01) {Responding to "Abolish the Filibuster!" by Timothy Noah in Slate, Chatterbox.}
The filibuster does seem like a useless tool. It, like the Electoral College, is rarely used for the good they were intended. However, the vote for Ashcroft does help support it as a tool to define bipartisan, if anything can. The interesting thing is that both sides claim bipartisanship. The Republicans with the idea that it was a bipartisan vote since 8 Democrats were on the side of the nominee. The Democrats with the idea that they split votes and did not vote in a block. I would like a little more on why the Republicans can make this claim though.
It really seems that the Dems have three points on their side. One, the Democrats that voted for Ashcroft, were the ones that made that decision. Two, the Republicans were unified in their support. And three, the Democrats had enough to block a cloture if they had stuck together, but chose not to waste the country's time and offered another olive branch to a white flag.
I do feel that enough white flags(whoops)olive branches were offered with the earlier Senate confirmations, and if this was not important enough to filibuster, what would be?
However there are also three important political motives for the olive branches, and one is to define the terms that Bush uses. If they are surrounded by olive branches, the Republicans will be caught up in their own words, before they can get out.
The second political motive is that it only takes one to start a filibuster, but reality is, that not enough would choose to continue it because they are not being as partisan as the other side and its nominee. Third, they will have established this record and try to use it in the next election.
More important though, is that abolishing the filibuster will do too much to drive us to majority rule. That is a bigger point you saved for last. Decisions on the process, let alone legislation, should not be made based on the convenience of those with power. But wait till a third party tries to use it. Whoops. Maybe it would be worth having a third party, if it could contribute to the proper use of a dictionary without the shifting sands of political power.

"intolerable truths"

are what Pat Buchanan called Ron Paul's "extraordinary statement" which is what Rudy Giuliani called them.

I will also note that Ed Schultz claims the possibility of more than a third party. Earlier I had noted the contrast between Ron Paul and Lyndon LaRouche in their coming to a party with a different approach, but Ed finds the immigration bill as a potential for break outs. Meanwhile I forgot to mention the "break ins" of Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich. Not to mention Mr. Inconvenient Truth himself.

But I would suggest that some of the candidates talk about merging their tickets. Now that would present it's own difficulties but no more than Democrats and Republicans splitting off from their "party" for a Unity08.

Maybe the debates could be shuffled to facilitate some mixing up. Bloomberg/Sanders Hagel/Liebermann
Now I know I'm mixed up, but just in the break down. It was mainly a combination of some independents thrown in with some Unity08 potentials.

There was nothing...

necessarily prophetic meant with Third Time's the Charm. Or was there? It may have been the spin-off of either or and the likes of Beck and some evangelicals. Even just in the either or of "I'm just saying", which might be related to a silver lining, which only has three sides. There is the light, the dark and the actual cloud that matters. [SAVED IN DRAFT & CONTINUED & SUBMITTED 3-22-11) Third Times a Charm, means that if you look right, look left, cross the street, and there is a chicken already on the other side, you may have learned a lesson...or not. Not to be making light of recent tragedies, but that actually is the point. That nuclear energy is not on the same plane as air or traffic accidents. But back to the original point, that Third Times a Charm regards Toning Down the* Lines.

*Or were we?

[SUB-TEXT: the table and I Ron Knee.]
[Update: my original assessment before the air strikes began was that the President was following the letter of the law if not the spirit. I won't get into the spirit of the Patriot Act but is part of the law as well as the 1973 War Powers Act and the constitution. My point being that it is one thing to debate an action by the president, it is another to make a law determining or undermining his powers. Any reassessment will have to take into account the current politics as well as earlier circumstances not to mentiuon the politics then. It is that frame in which I am optimistic that change matters as well as who is in charge.]
[Footnote to power and politics not to mention economics.]
[Not exactly breaking, but one reason going to congress would not make sense. Would it make sense to make doing the right thing even more political? Would it make sense for journalists to be giving detailed intel to an enemy? The right thing being to save lives rather than waiting for a massacre. It can be wondered well why not other places, well then get some consensus, but some are in the past and others may be prevented in the future or nothing may change. And there may be a bonus feature[**] in this turkey on the table and that is the subject of war funding and the budget process or complacency.]

Bane and Company

"If we keep talking about the economy we will lose."
A more anachronistically correct quote was never said.
The sentence and yes I mean (bane and Company, Inc.)

It was actually said by Presidential candidate John McCain, about their campaign, and is exactly what will doom any Republican campaign. The Democrats will want to keep talking about the economy, as well as what the solutions are.

Truth Tellers

Thom Hartmann notes that the truth teller of the Democrats is Kucinich and for the Republicans it is Ron Paul, who notes the history of the Republican party as against wars. And thanks to a quick google, the first few paragraphs hits it out of the park **. "Way out", as it is put there. Or a slam dunk if you will.

That was still the situation when Clinton was president and even when the current Bush was campaigning against being nation builders and policeman to the world. Another point in this regard is that old Bush in a China Shop metaphor where:
when we broke it, we don't own it, but we might pay for it.

Final note: On Unity08 plans for a bipartisan ticket, I think it is crazy or at minimum won't work. Now, not that it won't succeed. But not necessarily for the country. It really is hard to take a negative attitude with something that seems so middle of the road, but then if we put the people in the middle of the road, they may just get run down. OK! So metaphors may not work, but the may make a point, and getting somewhere that has a point is the "hard work". There! Does that make any progress on the point. Well it may just be going round and round, but that may be another result, not that I am trying to get the geometry covered. But now that I have run that into the ground, I will take a tangent and note that there may be room for dialogue on the third party or third or fourth way. Dialogue and debate is happening within each party. If there are any outliers. Those hanging back; LaRouche (may get the point); Nader (I am not so sure); Bloomberg or Hagel; or not lastly Wesley Clark. But above we have noted, and I believe I recall now that my comparison (if not noted earlier) was between Ron Paul and LaRouche rather than Kucinich, that there are certain mavericks but at least they are participating now. I would harken back to my point about Red and Blue America and the threat to the green. It must be noted that "at the risk of being obvious" must have been too deep and the PI editors* changed my word "green" to "color" which put a completely different tint on my letter. My point is that Unity08 may be more about the green and may not get us out of seeing red.

*(In the last line of "the threat to the green" link, which may have been a threat to someone's green, if not not black and white enough to fit their grey matter.)

**11:35 AM amended [six paragraphs to be precise, I had not read much beyond "To many people, however..." and that is where we must remember the words of Rudy Guliani, on or shortly after September 11th, something like: Aren't you glad George Bush is president? Case closed. These guys cannot fight or debate without misconstruing the point or the enemy, period. Black and white enough?]

GOP @)!@ ...(2012)

2012 that is.
Mitch Daniels, was my earliest hunch, Huntsman was a close second. Ron Paul was an early hope, but Gary Johnson beat him to the announcement. Now when I say hope, this is from the perspective that there be a good candidate for Republicans and the 2012 race, not that they should have any shot at being good for the country. This does not take into considerations any impact of a third party or independent candidate, or any political calculus. I don't find any references in a search of my blog but could have embedded some comment or link that may mention them. I associate Daniels with a Chris Matthews* comment, and Huntsman with some China controversy, while Paul and Johnson are libertarian. Which may be why I have been focused on economics and Ayn Rand. I would like to have a good de bait on neo-classical economics. It is hard to imagine Mitt Romney making it but then the longer the so-called libertarian or tea party candidate split the vote he or these guys could run the fish ladder, and it is hard to imagine a third party candidate that would not be just another spoiler. I don't want to do the political calculus to rock that boat.

But it may be a Peter, Paul and Robin' hood scenario. AKA a spin on our past presidents. But seriously or rather flippantly, the book is also about false equivalents. Third Times a Charm?

Nixon
Clinton
Bush?

November 20thth Blame Bush and Cheney
Noveber 21stBlame Bush and Cheney
November 22ndBlame Media

I was hoping by the third day, we would have a headline.
I am not the Leaker-In-Chief.

Why the Democrats can't impeach.
Who would follow? Who would be the incumbent?
This is the political calculus that people may not do the math on, but who realize that if Democrats and Republicans can't stand up for the constitution and what is right, then how can they stand up against each other. And it is my opinion that they do need to stand up against each other or they will fall over alone. It is called competition. If the people don't see it, it does not mean they do not realize it is not there.

It is called politics and if politicians can not do the job in the kitchen they should not be cooks let alone serve the nation.

Happy Holidays.

Two Evils? Or flippin flop?

[Pre-Emptive]* Comments on Business and Voting
In this case {Pre-Emptive} , meaning after barely a glance at the articles but reading their briefs in my daily TruthOut .

Two Reports Assail State Department Role on Iraq Security
By Eric Schmitt and David Rohde The New York Times

GOP Team Revives Electoral Vote Initiative
By Dan Morain and Joe Mathews
The Los Angeles Times

In the first matter of the first MBA prez I took a bit longer {of a glance at a} tangent.
And reached a familiar metaphor {embedded there} : Poker. And {we can} conclude that he does not like to play the hand he is dealt and he is the dealer.

In the second matter, Electoral College aside, it seems a matter of black and white. In this case whether Californians want their candidate to be president or to dilute their vote. It is admirable that some states have proportional representation but when it is applied to a larger state and not to all states, it seems to defy some reasoning, much as voting for a third candidate on a lesser of two evils {theory}.

It should be clear that the only thing that should be black and white is ones vote. And the way the vote should work is that the winner is the one that gets the most votes. If a third candidate gets some, it should not be hard to see that the greater of two evils results.

* normally I reserve brackets for edited changes at the bottom, in this case this will mean this will be veering from that policy, and upgrade this post other than than housekeeping with {brackets}s.

Third Time's The Charm

[Finally posted 3-14-11 ]
Three times lucky? Actually I have not been lucky in finding the origin of the first, but I have been several times knocked off course. Just as I wrote this the news was noting the passing of a local law enforcement officer who had three centers of gravity, friends, family and work, so is that the message? "Every cloud has a silver lining" has also recently infiltrated my blog. That is credited roughly to John Milton and Katty Macane.

Numbers may play a big part in superstitions, but they also may play a big part in meanings. Past, present and future is just one case for threes, though not necessarily in that order, and this is not just to play with words. Of course if superstitions play any part in society, they will play a part in words, and words play a part in meanings, but which comes first? Some of this math and meandering came to my attention in regards to politics. Have you heard of the third way? The Clinton Adminstration was the first occasion I became aware of it in a political form, not that I had done the math in regard to other departments. But basically there are the two ends of the political spectrum and then there is the centrist. But is it the people, the target or the answers that are there? Or is it target, people or answers...who knows? However at this time I intend to apply it to the topic of navigation, or at least The Myth of Triangulation and wonder if a silver lining plays into any of this. While it is plane* to see where three plays into many things, it should suffice to read Robert Reich's article yourself as I have now read it twice. But I have yet to revisit the concept of navigation itself or any application of the tetrahedron to other perspectives of improving on our picture.

Carry On Comment!

Borrowed from an AM1090 caller to one of the afternoon talk shows, the interesting dilemma of Karl Rove is his confessing apparently...

that he has no diary or record of his work with the administration.

This with his apparent plan to write a book, means...

either he has a very good memory or it will be in the fiction section.

Actually I just rearranged the caller's comment to my own taste in my usual way.

His point was that it takes "I don't recall" and all it's variations "off the table" when it comes to congressional investigations.
I would add
the only alternative
is straight to "the pen".

More lines of investigation on Rove history

[Second thoughts on First Thoughts from First Read: There should NEVER be another Karl Rove. It is a cheap shot and a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy to promulgate such a character [italics and link added 8-15-07]by looking for the next one.

At least they admitted that "they" (the media) create them (the turd blossoms), but of course there will be, on the Right, as several of his (Rove's) proteges are distributed amongst the Republican candidates. But on The Left there is too much distribution of brains to get away with anything like what the administration has so far distributed. Genius should be about what works, and nothing much has, with this administration, except accumulation of ruin and power. * [it.a.l.a. 8-15-07]
Shame on MSNBC for such work. There is some good news on the new Hillary ad, but to follow with a piece on Rove? And while running the bottom line, "the next Karl Rove" under "her inner Bill".]

* [8-15-07 Re: David Frum link "and power", reminiscent of Lakoff where he points out that the difference between Democrats and Republicans is that the former run to govern, and the latter govern to run. That may say as much about governing as running, and as much about the left as the right, but rather than looking for a third way in the middle of any political spectrum, maybe the perspective [way to see it] is from above the plane, while a plane requires a third perspective that is not in line.]
